Have you ever felt overwhelmed and received the advice to take a deep breath? Did you know that we can ask our dogs to do the same thing? With the Control Unleashed skill Take A Breath, we are actually teaching our dogs to take deep breaths. This helps with arousal modulation, becomes an indicator of how our dog is feeling, and can actually become a way to co-regulate (yes, even we can benefit from this skill!) Kim creatively breaks Take A Breath into two parts. First, we build the picture for our dogs by focusing on the setup, our mechanics, and the cue. Then, we begin to actually watch for and feed for breaths. Kim will demonstrate the many different ways to monitor a dog’s breathing, from the very visible, giant nostril poofs, to feeling for the tiniest movement of the chest. This workshop will help you set your dog up for success to breathe deep, and will teach you how to see and reward the behavior. Every dog and handler team can learn the benefits of sitting down and breathing together!
