DAY ONE: The Science and Art of Teaching Animals Learn from Ken’s extensive experience and insights on how to train animals effectively and humanely. Topics that will be covered in this course include: • An Advanced Training Perspective: How to apply the principles of learning theory to complex and challenging training scenarios • Enrichment and Variety: How to provide animals with stimulating and engaging activities that enhance their physical and mental well-being • Secrets of Successful Husbandry Training: How to train animals to cooperate willingly and calmly with medical and veterinary procedures DAY TWO: Training Skills and Concepts for Professional Animal Trainers Suitable for trainers of all levels, whether you work with zoo animals, aquarium animals, working dogs, pet animals, or any other species. You will benefit from Ken Ramirez’s extensive experience and knowledge, as well as his engaging and interactive teaching style. Topics covered will include: • Solve common training problems with confidence and precision • Evaluate training plans and apply practical solutions to avoiding trainer mistakes • Develop complex behaviours, as Ken explores the fascination research around concept training and the cognitive abilities of the animals round us DAY THREE: Choice, Consent and Control – Avoiding Chaos! Learn from Ken’s extensive experience, how to give animals more autonomy and agency in the training process, and how to avoid or resolve common challenges that may arise. Some of the topics that will be covered in this course include: • How to offer animals choices and control over their environment, without compromising safety or structure • Handling animal mistakes positively, how to deal with training errors in a constructive and positive way • How to train multiple animals simultaneously, carefully considering group dynamics and the thoughtful use of stationing, targeting, and cue discrimination - creating cooperative and harmonious behaviours among animals. DAY FOUR: The Challenges of Training Working Dogs You will learn from Ken’s extensive experience and insights on how to train working dogs using positive reinforcement, deal with distractions, and achieve successful outcomes in different contexts. Some of the topics that will be covered in this course are: • Complex Training Tools: How to train dogs to perform behaviors in various environments and situations, and cope with stimuli that might otherwise trigger unwanted reactions. • Scent Discrimination Work: How to set up training scenarios, test reliability, and maintain motivation and accuracy • Research Training: How to train dogs to participate in scientific studies that explore their cognitive and social abilities, such as memory, problem-solving, communication, and cooperation • Snake Avoidance Training: How to train dogs to avoid venomous snakes and other potential dangers in the wild, using humane and effective methods DAY FIVE: Aggression Management & Treatment If you are interested in learning how to manage and rehabilitate aggressive animals, this is the course for you! Learn from Ken’s extensive experience and insights on how to deal with aggression in a constructive and positive way. Some of the topics that will be covered in this course are: • How to identify the causes and types of aggression • How to assess the risk and severity of aggression • How to set up safe and effective training scenarios • How to apply appropriate training strategies and tools to modify or eliminate aggressive behaviour • How to evaluate the progress and outcome of the training
