Description

There are special considerations and challenges when living with and caring for dogs that are both blind and deaf. While they need all of the same things that seeing and hearing dogs need, we do need to make adaptations, and often they need us to think outside of the box that we're used to. We'll discuss some reasons why a dog may be blind and deaf, whether they are born with these sensory differences, or they develop them later in life. Vision and hearing loss can happen to any dog, of any breed, and at any age. Knowing how to best support dogs through these changes and challenges allows us to ease their transitions and give them the best opportunities to succeed. You might have heard some things about blind deaf dogs, and they may not all be completely true. We'll take a look at some common myths and find out what the actual truths are, and you'll learn the answers to some common questions about what life with blind deaf dogs is really like. Along the way, you'll see examples of how to use tactile communication, and you'll learn how to best meet a blind deaf dog's needs while instilling a deep sense of safety and trust. We'll take a look at creating a safe physical environment, encouraging confidence and resilience, and how we can help our blind deaf dogs to have an amazing quality of life. These life skills are so important, not only in the home environment, but also are so important for dog professionals to consider when offering their services to clients. By creating safe spaces for blind deaf dogs where they can experience deep trust with their families and caregivers, meeting all of their needs in ways that make sense for them, and believing in possibilities, we can create lifestyles in which they will thrive. Please join us for this extraordinary learning experience.
