Description

Learners will be exposed to the Canine Assessment of Risk for Shelters (CARS) framework. CARS is a protocol for shelters to use to ensure safe placement of animals into the community. This framework includes guidelines on how to assess shelter dogs' behavioral responses to humans, other dogs and domestic animals. It also provides a framework on considerations of quality of life, separation-related concerns and a bite scale. This session will focus on the assessment of human interactions and dog-to-dog interactions, as well as a structured approach to examining data across time to assess the risk of placement.
