This 6-session mentorship provides a unique opportunity to receive expert guidance in transforming your practice to incorporate consent-based interactions and trauma-informed care. Force-free humane methods are the industry standard for best practices in canine behavior modification. Best practices for animal assisted interventions also require that animals involved are participating without coercion, manipulation, or force. But how do we implement this, and how do we ensure that the needs of both our human and our canine clients are met? This mentorship will support you in cultivating skills for Somatic Consent. Consent is a lifestyle practice, a way of approaching interactions with others, and encompasses: slowing down to cultivate awareness of yourself; developing a solid self-care support system so you can professionally acknowledge the impact of your actions on others; understanding vocabulary and structure for social interactions with other humans and with dogs; recognizing, naming, and meeting underlying needs; and facilitating safety in interactions between humans and dogs through efficient activity analysis, expert adjustment of tasks, self, and environment, and modeling healthy boundary setting.
