Natural Encounters Training and Education Center (NEI TEC) presents NEI TEC Talks: “Errorless Learning Week”. Join us on Monday, October 18, and Wednesday, October 20, for Dr. Susan Friedman’s (BehaviorWorks) two-part presentation on Errorless Learning. On Friday, October 22, she’ll be joined by Tim Van Loan (Behavior and Enrichment Manager, ABQ BioPark), Debbi Marrin (Director of Training and Behavioral Husbandry, San Francisco Zoo), and Marty MacPhee (Animal Behavior and Guest Experience Consultant) for our NEI TEC in Conversation panel discussion. Monday October 18 & Wednesday October 20, 2:00-3:30pm EDT (1-hour Seminar, 30-minute Q&A) “Tsk, No, Eh-eh: Clearing the Path to Reinforcement with an Errorless Learning Mindset,” Part 1&2 – Dr. Susan Friedman We all know the saying, “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.” Unfortunately, trial and error approaches typically result in low rates of reinforcement that generate unwanted fallout. Learners practice errors making correct responding less likely, and they become frustrated, setting the occasion for aggressive behavior and giving up. This fallout led researchers and practitioners to ask, are errors really necessary for learning to occur? Errorless learning is a term used to describe a teaching approach that limits incorrect responses through careful arrangement of the teaching conditions. In this presentation, the basic elements of designing an error reduced learning environment are discussed in order to design more effective, efficient and humane training plans. Friday October 22, 2:00-3:30pm EDT; 90-Minute Discussion and Q&A. NEI TEC in Conversation – Dr. Susan Friedman, Tim Van Loan, Debbi Marrin, and Marty MacPhee. Join us as NEI TEC faculty members share and discuss their thoughts on the topics presented in the previous sessions. The panelists will answer questions presented to them by the attendees.
