Tier 2 of the Barbara Handelman Service Dog Trainer’s Course (BHSDT), is designed for disabled handlers training their own service dogs, and for pet dog trainers. The course offers a thorough knowledge-based foundation for disabled individuals wanting to train their own service dogs or pet dog trainers considering becoming professional service dog trainers. The course offers an overview of service dog laws, ethics, canine candidate selection, public access training, and training foundation skills for service dog tasks. The Barbara Handelman Service Dog Trainer Course is a self-paced course for which students have 9-months to complete all the requirements. This course alone does not prepare students to train service dogs for clients with disabilities. This course can serve as fulfillment of some of the education prerequisites to qualify for Tier 1 of the BHSDT, if the student wishes to continue their studies and become a Professional Service Dog Trainer.
