Last year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released an alert regarding reports of increased incidence of a heart disease in dogs called dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). The FDA and researchers speculated that the increased incidence was related to the consumption of foods that were negatively affecting dogs’ taurine status, leading to taurine-deficiency DCM. Several pet food ingredients were implicated and studies were initiated to learn more. Recently, in late June of 2019, the FDA published an update. The new report provides additional information about the number and breeds of affected dogs, the foods and ingredients that may be implicated, and recommendations for veterinarians and pet owners.
