Attendees will learn: • How to prepare a pet first aid kit; • How to prepare a pet emergency kit for a natural disaster; • The importance of knowing your pet’s normal physical condition, behaviors and habits; • How to identify a normal heart rate, pulse rate, breathing and body temperature; • How to safely muzzle a dog; • Your pet’s “ABCs” (airway, breathing, circula-tion); • The basics of pet CPR; • Basic wound care and how to control bleeding; • Basic splint/bandage techniques for muscle, bone or joint injuries; • What to do if a pet is in shock, or has hypo or hyperthermia (cold or heat stroke). Handouts will be provided, as will mannequins for hands-on practice of first aid techniques and live dogs for learning to listen to heart rates and find pulse rates.
