They want their dog to respond to “commands” accurately and quickly. People often attribute a dog’s failures to do this to dominance, stupidity or stubbornness. It’s more likely that these mistakes result from confusion (or insufficient motivation); the dog doesn’t know what the trainer wants because the cues are unfamiliar, inconsistent or unclear. Understanding the basic science of cueing will help you improve the process by which you choose, add, change and maintain cues. You will be able to minimize the amount of static in the signals you send your dog, providing a clearer channel of communication. An understanding of behavioral cues will also pave the way for the creation of conceptual cues that go beyond eliciting simple movements. This hands-on workshop combines lecture, video examples and several exercises with your dog. Kathy will walk you through the steps to build strong meaningful cues whether you are a pet-dog instructor, competition- or working-dog trainer or an owner who wants a more reliable and responsive dog. This seminar is appropriate for pet dog trainers, sport/competition dog trainers or enthusiasts, shelter/rescue staff, zoo and exotic trainers as well as training savvy owners looking to improve their relationship with their dog. There are 8 working spots (attend with a dog, defined perimeters apply) as well as 112 auditing spots. 2 Ways to Participate: 1) Working Participants with your dog (limited to 8) Working Participants must sign up for both days. • You and your dog will be paired with another handler/dog team during training exercises. You and your training partner will take turns working the dogs. We ask that you bring only one dog as the training sessions build on each other. There will be multiple training sessions each day. • You may request a working partner or we will randomly assign you. All team requests must be requested no later than 10 days before the workshop. Working dog requirements, must attend both days: Requirement for working-dog participation - Dogs should be at an intermediate training level (at least). Dogs of all ages are welcome as long as they have a repertoire of at least 6 behaviors, at least partially on cue (i.e., no food lure needed to get the behavior to happen). Some experience with shaping, with or without a lure, is helpful. Dogs must be able to stay quietly in a crate or ex-pen out of owner’s sight and must be tolerant of people and dogs in close proximity. You and your dog will be paired with another dog/handler team (and possibly an auditor) during training. This workshop is not appropriate for reactive dogs. 2) Lab Assistants/Auditors (Limit: 112) If your dog does not meet the requirements, or you prefer to observe, please join us to participate in our conversation and to watch the dogs & handlers work. Some auditors may be asked to assist the working teams with some of the exercises; you may opt out of this if you wish.
