Background: Argentina lacks proper dog trainer education, most dog trainers here do not have any formal education and many use outdated methods. My goal with this course is to provide updated information and educate professional dog trainers. I will also encourage the students to take the CCPDT test (which I will request as a group once I have a number of students interested that qualify to take it) because it will have to be made available in Spanish and here in Buenos Aires, Argentina. This is a 1 year long course with 2-hour weekly lectures and 2-hour weekly hands-on practice. The course will be in Spanish. The lectures will cover the following topics, organized in 5 different modules: 1- Dog Behavior: a. Introduction to animal behavior science; b. How to read and interpret scientific literature regarding dog behavior and training; b. Neuroanatomy and neurophysiology of behavior; c. History and evolution of the domestic dog; d. Dominance theory: myths and truths; e. Puppy developmental stages, dog adolescence, dog adulthood and senior dogs; f. Dog senses and their communication; g. Common dog behaviors (mating, feeding and social behaviors); h. Breed characteristics, temperament tests and their validity according to the scientific literature. 2- The role of the dog trainer: a. Different dog training classes that can be offered to the public; b. Canine sports; c. How to organize and run a puppy class; d. How to organize and run adolescent and adult dog classes; e. Oral presentation skills and how to teach to different type of owners and their dogs; f. Preventing and managing dog fights or accidents in class; g. Ethics in dog training. 3- Learning Theory: a. Classical and operant conditioning; b. Single-event learning; c. Stimulus control; d. Extinction; e. Social learning and imitation in dogs; f. Cognitive capabilities of dogs; g. Disadvantages and dangers of punishment-based training methods. 4- Training Methods: a. Reward-based training and how to use treats and other rewards correctly; b. Lure training, capturing (all or nothing training), shaping (including clicker training), target training; c. Positive dog training tools; d. Basic, intermediate and advanced dog commands; e. Dog tricks; f. Dog games for class and home; g. Helping owners with common dog behavior problems (potty training, leash pulling, excessive barking, etc.); h. Referrals and working along side dog behavior consultants or veterinary ethologists for aggression and anxiety. 5- Basic dog care and health: a. basic dog care owners should know about; b. Vaccination requirements in Argentina and statistics of dog diseases in the area; c. Common dog diseases and referrals to the vet; d. Dog CPR and first aid The hands-on practice involves assisting to group classes with their dogs, observing group and private lessons given by a CCPDT dog trainer, assist in group and private lesson classes and if they pass each instance finish the course by giving a group and a private lesson as lead trainers. The course will have a test after each module is completed and students must pass each instance to receive their certification at the end of the course.
