Description

This is an ongoing class that we offer throughout the year and online. There are multiple locations most of which are at REI stores. The wilderness first aid for dogs class is for the outdoor enthusiasts who like to take their dogs on their adventures. These adventures may include areas where veterinary care is very limited or unavailable. Learn how to give your dog a better chance of survival and/or prevent medical emergencies from getting worse by knowing what to do when emergencies happen during outdoor activities. This is an introductory program on wilderness first aid and the management of medical emergencies for dogs in remote areas, trail hiking, camping, water activities and more. Topics to be discussed include physical fitness for outdoor activities, preparing for activities, how to perform emergency triage on a dog, safely transporting a dog to veterinary care from remote locations, how to obtain vital signs, determining normal vs abnormal readings, how to utilize materials in a wilderness pet first aid kit, manage wounds, place splints, heat stroke, snake bites, encounters with wild animals, exposure, burns, choking and more.
