Description

Constructional aggression treatment (CAT) was initially introduced by Dr. Jesus Rosales-Ruiz and Kellie Snider, M.S. in 2007 at the University of North Texas as a new approach for treating dog aggression-related issues. Constructional Aggression Treatment differs from classical counter conditioning, which relies on changing the dog’s behavior by treating the underlying emotional response in a non-contingent manner. CAT acknowledges the importance of classical conditioning, but includes operant conditioning as well. While a dog’s aggressive response is initially classically conditioned by the presence of a triggering stimulus, allowing the dog to resolve the conflict through experiential learning can lead to faster and more effective outcomes. This session will cover the history of CAT, and a general overview of this training modality.
