Description

Colorado Northwestern Community College - Craig, Colorado Jason Heng CPDT-KA CNWI Certifying Official for the National Association of Canine Scent Work™ 3 days of amazing learning and fun! Build a better team! Be a better player! Make your dog proud! FRIDAY – JUNE 8TH - Mirror of Competition – The first few competitions we participate in; ORT, NW1 even NW2 is the place where we find our flaws, or at least the mirror of the test day sometimes feels like it finds all our training gaps. To prepare we need to find those gaps before competition so we can be successful – it’s not always about getting a ribbon – sometimes the biggest lesson we paid to receive was to highlight what our dog learned from our training. If the dog learned to “false” near the hide then we taught them that with our reward style, timing or through some other misunderstanding. Let’s build on our skills to make sure we understand what our dogs have learned in training to date. LOCATION: MOFFAT COUNTY FAIR GROUNDS GRANDSTANDS BUILDING JUST EAST OF CRAIG. SATURDAY – JUNE 9TH - Don’t play by the rules – The test of a trial has certain rules that allow for a fair assessment of each team, where each search is created to hold that consistency as much as possible for the day for all teams. However, our training days are not designed that way – we should be pushing each team to NOT play by the rules of trial because there are no rules in training. We have goals to meet and if you are playing by the trial rules in training then you are handicapping your goals. Things as simple as the routine reward process, # of hides, covering the area, checking all the containers can create skewed patterns and fixed expectations for the dog based on “in trial” type training. There lies the problem – what happens when you encounter a trial search that is outside of your training patterns? LOCATION: WYMAN LIVING HISTORY MUSEUM – 1 MILE EAST OF CRAIG ON HWY 40 – LOOK FOR THE SIGN. SUNDAY – JUNE 10TH - Competitive Decisions – Let’s play blackjack! What is the probability of going bust with cards totaling 15 – 58%, how about 16 – 62%, or 17 – 69%? We are making the similar decisions in nosework, especially at NW3 and Elite – once we have found 1 hide what is the probability of another hide, or when we found 2 the probability of a 3rd. Well those percentages are dependent on some search factors, but you are likely making that assessment in the search. How accurate are you? Do you feel like you are gambling? Now are you ready to play some games? Let’s challenge those decisions and find out if you can beat the hide setter, or better yet become a better competitive decision maker! LOCATION: WYMAN LIVING HISTORY MUSEUM – 1 MILE EAST OF CRAIG ON HWY 40 – LOOK FOR THE SIGN. 10 working spots available each day - unlimited audit spots $125 working spot - $75 audit 9 am to 4 pm each day For registration information contact Laura Tyler ACDBC CPDT-KA CNWI dogs@totalteamworktraining.com
