Description

We are thrilled to bring Chirag Patel to the United States for a rare 3-day workshop opportunity! Dog training needs a big re-think! Join Chirag Patel for 3 full days focusing on positive reinforcement with a difference. Chirag will take us on a journey covering invaluable topics and truly bring our training and relationships with our animals to a new level. Chirag Patel is the owner of Domesticated Manners in London, UK. From here he consults on the behavior management and training of domestic animals kept as pets, exotics, zoo and laboratory animals. His passion is the application of behavior change science and ethics to improve the life of animals living under human care, especially applying training principles to teach animals to be active participants in their own daily and veterinary care in a stress free manner. As well as running Domesticated Manners, Chirag works for Dogs Trust as Assistant Head of Canine Training & Behaviour. Chirag also consults for Guides Dogs for the Blind Association and the Kong Company. Day 1- Rethinking Puppy Class Puppy socialization classes are very popular and rightly so. However are we stopping to critically consider what it is that we are promoting and teaching in the name of socialization or are we just following the popular information. This workshop will focus on asking these questions via PowerPoint presentation, discussion and practical demonstrations with puppies both in a 1 on 1 basis and a live class taught by Chirag. Chirag will explore facts vs opinion and help answer some common questions. Should you have off lead play or not? If so, how do you do this? How do you deal with clients, their questions and those clients that you may label “difficult and unmotivated”? To teach bite inhibition or not? How do you teach this in a way that is practical for our clients? This workshop is a 1-day version of Chirag’s Practical Puppy Training Instructors 7 day course. Although originally designed for class instructors, this 1 day workshop is geared toward both professional trainers and puppy owners, foster parents and anyone looking to provide essential support during this crucial development time. Join us for a day that will take puppy training beyond the text book. Day 2- Understanding, Managing, & Modifying Problem Behavior Clients always call trainers when they are experiencing problem behaviors with their pets. In this Session Chirag will focus on a practical and scientific approach to analyzing and resolving problem behavior. The Session will cover various management tools and techniques, as well as strategies for effecting behavior change. Going beyond theory, the Session will emphasize how to use these skills as a consultant in areas of work, including taking case histories, working with clients, evaluating motivation, and other practical real-world situations. As passionate and interested trainers, our approach is sometimes “too much” for a caregiver who just wants to have “this problem behavior fixed.” Chirag will look at simple, yet ethical and effective, ways to work on various behavior-management and change exercises. Day 3- Force Free Training Tool Kit (limited to 36 total participants, 6 working dogs) This workshop is all about getting hands-on. Attendees will be split into groups of 6 people and be given one dog to work with throughout the day in short training sessions. Chirag will provide presentation on teaching foundation, husbandry and other behaviors that empower the dog to “say” yes, no, start and stop. If you are interested in bringing your dog to Day 3, please email Natalie at nzielinski@wihumane.org Dogs must be people and dog social and be willing to work with unfamiliar handlers.
