Description

This presentation will look at the group of dogs commonly referred to as Terriers. Attendee will learn some of the history of the breed, their popularity in recent times and examine some of the available varieties of this canid. After defining some of the available phenotypes, we will then look at what makes terriers differ from other groups. Discussion will be about the motor patterns of the terrier and how it has suited man over the years. Then we will look at the terrier pet and working dog of today. Finally we will talk about the behavior of these dogs and discuss modification of mal adaptive aspects of their behavior using different techniques I as well as other trainers have successfully used. Different management techniques as well as the proper use of a "break stick" will be discussed. Finally, a brief look at some pharmaceutical interventions will be presented. There should be time at the end for questions and answers, as well as discussion of recent legislation concerning these dogs.
