Recertification To maintain Certified Pet Dog Trainer designation, Certified Pet Dog Trainers (CPDTs) are required to recertify every three years.
If you are beginning your recertification application late, or are concerned you might be late, consult the CCPDT's Late Submission Policy.
For further information, contact the CCPDT Administrator, 1350 Broadway, 17th Floor, New York, NY 10018, 212-356-0682, administrator@ccpdt.org. Recertification Policy Recertification may be accomplished by accumulating continuing education units (CEUs),submitting one examination question, and signing the CCPDT Code of Ethics or by repeating the full certification process (references, experience statement, etc.). CEUs are earned through approved continuing education related to the test content outline. The following are examples of activities that may earn CEUs when these activities are directly related to the CPDT test content outline:
CEU credit may be earned for participation in such activities in two ways: for participating in Pre-approved programs and activities, where the presenters or sponsors have applied in advance for permission to grant CEUs; or for Independent programs and activities, where the attendee applies for CEU credit after the fact.
Recertification Requirements There are two different ways to qualify for recertification.
To recertify through proof of continuing education:
To recertify by completing the full certification process, you must arrange to take the exam, paying all fees and re-submitting all application forms including the references, and a signed Code of Ethics:
Recertification Fee If you are recertifying by submitting the required CEUs the fee is $175. If you are recertifying by completing the full certification process, the fee as stated in the Handbook for Candidates will apply. If you are submitting your application late and have received an approved extension, you must also include the appropriate late fee. (See the Late Submission Policy.) SUMMARY TABLE
Additional comments, restrictions, requirements: The maximum number of CEUs obtainable from one source or activity is 20. Conferences and seminars with multiple, independent presenters (such as the annual APDT Conference) are not limited to 20. For example: a 5-day workshop given by one person or training entity with 32 actual instruction hours would be limited to 20 CEUs. A 5-day workshop with 32 actual instruction hours given by 5 independent presenters could earn as many as the 32 CEUs. Training received from a proprietary entity for the purpose of, or resulting in, ‘certification’ for teaching in the employ of, or franchised by, or representing the proprietary entity will not be accepted for CCPDT CEUs. Acceptance of such training hours could be construed as an ‘endorsement’ of the proprietary program or methodology. NOTE: The CCPDT's offering of CPDT CEUs for any event indicates only that the course content for each event as submitted adheres to the CCPDT's current content guidelines. The CCPDT does not endorse any specific instructor, school, or commercial entities, nor does it make any representation, warranty or guarantee as to any participant’s satisfaction with any of the included events. CCPDT expressly disclaims liability for damages of any kind arising from participation. Advice to Certificants Seeking Independent CEUs The CCPDT recognizes that trainers may plan to attend a seminar, program or event that has not been pre-approved for CEUs. Trainers have the option to apply to the CCPDT for CEU approval for these programs. To submit a program or event for approval go to CEU Approval Forms. Upon receipt of your request, CCPDT will review the program material for compliance with the CPDT test content; whether program qualifies for CEUs based on that content; and how many CEUs may be granted. You will be notified within 45 days of the CCPDT’s decision. Please retain a copy of the approval decision to submit with your recertification application. There are no allowances for late applications due to a shortfall of CEU credit. CCPDT strongly advises you to submit these requests and verify the number of CEU credits that will be granted well in advance of your recertification deadline. If you submit your request for CEU credit with your application, and it is denied, and you have not obtained elsewhere the 36 CEUs required for recertification, your recertification application may be delayed and/or returned unprocessed. Recertification and CEU Forms: The following forms are available for download in Adobe Acrobat PDF file format: Application for Recertification. Certified trainers seeking recertification must submit the along with the included Continuing Education Unit Credit Record and supporting documentation. Click here to download the file. NOTES on verification:
Late Submission Policy Late Submission of Recertification Documents Documents postmarked after the designated recertification deadline will be charged a minimum late fee of $100.00 (US). The required recertification documents must be received within 30 (thirty) days of the original recertification deadline date and must be submitted with the required late fee in addition to the current, designated renewal fee to be considered. Documents submitted 30 (thirty) days or more after the original recertification date will not be considered unless prior written approval for an extension was received. A copy of the extension letter must accompany the recertification documents with payment of the appropriate late fees. In addition to the minimum late fee, above, a fee of $50.00 may be incurred for each additional thirty day period that the submission is deemed late. All fees are in addition to the current, designated renewal fee. The Certification Council for Pet Dog Trainers reserves the right to return documents, unprocessed, that are not submitted with all appropriate fees. Request for Recertification Extension The Certification Council for Pet Dog Trainers recognizes that extraordinary circumstances may result in a CPDT's inability to complete the recertification requirements within the designated time period. At such time, the CPDT must submit a written request for an extension stating the nature of their circumstances. Such requests will be reviewed on a case by case basis and the CPDT will be notified of the decision within 30 days of the receipt of their request. All or part of the appropriate late fee may be assessed. Payment of Late Fees Payment of late fees must be submitted by check or money order in US dollars and made payable to the Certification Council for Pet Dog Trainers. Retesting A CPDT may choose to recertify by repeating the full certification process before the expiration of their current certification.
