Dr. Dunbar was an integral part of the longest research project ever conducted on dog behavior: a 30-year long Yale / UC Berkeley study that radically changed our understanding of how dogs learn and how they can be trained. Many of the findings had powerful practical applications, particularly for the treatment of fearfulness, reactivity and aggression. This seminar will offer insights into the development of social hierarchies, informed by scientific research and decades of dog training experience. With a better understanding of how dogs develop stable social relationships, we can move beyond unfounded notions of “dominance” and the provocation of physical punishment and get to the real work of preventing and resolving fearfulness, reactivity and aggression towards other dogs and people.
