Most new (and experienced) clicker trainers have heard of shaping, but remarkably few have actually done it or even seen it. This 6-week daily session will introduce students to the truly breathtaking communication that is possible between an animal and a trainer. Using principles of clicker training, we begin by introducing students to small, easy, exercises designed to build physical competence in the use of the clicker, treats, observation, and setting factors. Practise and homework assignments are offset by lecture and supporting video material from the instructor. We then move on to showing the student how to teach the dog to be shaped using behaviors that will likely be unimportant to the students later, such as ear wiggling, head turning, paw lifting, and so on. By the use of unimportant behaviors and discussion thereof, we teach the students to sit back from the event, keeping ego and frustration out of the equation and watching the dog gain enthusiasm and confidence in her ability to guide the learning rather than just responding. Finally, when dog and trainer are ready, we will branch out into more specific questions, problems, and behaviors presented by the students. All applicable students have the ability to submit daily homework videos and questions for evaluation and critiquing by the instructor. Students also benefit from seeing videos and questions of other students, and the ensuing discussion.
