This provocative course will be a thorough examination of the average modern American pet dog's behavioral, emotional, and psychological health in the 21st Century as expressive of a “fish out of water” predicament. The well-intentioned passion, care, protection, and provisions commonplace in modern pet ownership have as yet unrecognized consequences that must be explored if we are to understand and address the increasingly common behavioral symptoms of our canine companions. Environmental and sensory stressors, over-stimulation, space restrictions, exercise reduction, inability to engage in natural or selected behaviors, anthropomorphic high expectations about behavior in a sedentary lifestyle, confusing social interactions with people and other pets, rampant unscientific mislabeling of behavior, and a virtual severance from nature have all contributed to the predicament of the modern dog.
