Understanding the factors that come together on trial day can help you build a better handler strategy and training program from foundation through NW3 Elite competition. This seminar will cover the building blocks of training for dog and handler that support the ultimate teamwork on trial day through review, discussion and analysis of trial video, training footage, location photos, and demonstrations. (No working spots; lecture and demonstrations only.) Learn from NACSW™ founder Amy Herot, one of the most experienced K9 Nose Work® instructors and certifying officials in the sport. Amy has officiated at, or attended, 18 of the 20 NW3 trials held to date and countless NW2 and NW1 trials. She has reviewed and analyzed hundreds of element tests and other training footage. Her students have titled at all levels and include 4 of the 5 NW3 Elite title holders. What to expect: • The Training Process: ◦ Patience, expectations, nerves, acceptance ◦ Is your dog ready? ◦ Are you truly ready? ◦ You may be ready for trial, but your dog may not have all the foundation to go out there without support. • The Walk-through: ◦ What should you be looking at? ◦ Safety and more…what’s your strategy? • Search Area Analysis: ◦ Complexity for all levels – what does the location look like and what clues can you glean? • Trial Day: ◦ Expectations of the dog: ▪ Trial day, environment - putting it all together in one day. ◦ Expectations of the hander. ▪ Wanting to title: pressure and nerves. ▪ Maybe your title doesn’t happen the first time. ◦ What’s at stake and does the dog know? ▪ Accept who your dog is and where they are in their learning process. ▪ Learning takes place at a trial, too. ▪ Maintain your support of your dog. • After the Trial ◦ Productive learning from your trial experience, no matter the outcome. • Competition Video: ◦ Analysis of the team work - strategy or training issues? ◦ Why teams miss odors ◦ Odor - obedience vs. patterns? ◦ Handler
