HAWS’ Behavior Department is pleased to present the Winter Symposium, a day-long educational experience focusing on alternative approaches to companion animal care, management and training. Applied Companion Animal Nutrition — The clinician will lead a discussion of case studies provided by Symposium participants. We will assess your pets’ health and behavior needs, create dietary and supplement plans, and evaluate the potential for desired outcomes. The Use of Therapeutic Laser in Small Animal Medicine —- A discussion of therapeutic lasers in small animal physical rehabilitation and general practice, including how and why lasers work, types of lasers , precautions, and contraindications. Several case studies will be explored in detail. End of Life Care —- Modern medicine has gifted our pets with longer life, but this very gift can make end-of-life decisions more complicated, and much more likely to be associated with feelings of guilt and regret. Learn about options that are available for end-of-life care, including home hospice and palliative care, and how you can participate in this process. Pet Loss & Grief —- Discusses loss and grief from the perspectives of both pet owners and animal care professionals, including the vicarious trauma (VT) which may result in bereavement overload. With appropriate outlets, the subsequent vulnerability, burnout, or post-traumatic stress reaction can be greatly reduced. The discussion will include an experiential exercise for stress reduction, as well as guidance for supporting those who grieve. The Effects of Adaptil on Stress Levels of Shelter Dogs -- Poster presentation. Pet Loss: A Guide for Owners and Professionals —-
