Description

The decision to present this topic was actually prompted by requests and discussions we had with two BEN members. You may have seen the question posed in our FB group about rattlesnake avoidance training using a shock collar. That was one. The second was a question a BEN member emailed to us about the advisability of using a shock collar to teach a recall, in a complicated and unusual case with lots of extenuating circumstances. A third reason for deciding to take on this topic is that while taking behavior histories from several of our current clients, we discovered that they have used and/or were using remote shock collars with their dogs. We know that’s not uncommon, and many of you take on cases where the owners have used shock collars of various sorts. It’s important to be able to come from an informed perspective when talking to clients about shock collars. This requires more than arguing that they cause aggression (not always true as your clients will argue). For all these reasons, we feel it’s important to cover this topic. All of us need to be able to talk rationally, objectively, and accurately share the available science about punishment, negative reinforcement, and avoidance conditioning using shock.
