Description

Course Description: This course will expand the student’s repertoire of professional behaviors in terms of: case management; addressing liability issues; preparing service agreements, liability waivers and end-of-service documents; coaching humans in professional relationships; and professional ethics. Students will explore how to deal with the client effectively and professionally. For the most part, much of the behavior technologist’s job is advising human clients and not working directly with companion animals (although that happens sometimes). This course will explore all of the major areas in the field of professional ethics and professional practice guidelines / code of ethics as well. The student will explore issues related to competence, confidentiality, informed consent, honesty in marketing and also the ethics of implementing aversive methods, emphasizing avoiding them of course. Behavioral Objectives: The objective of this program of study is to measurably expand the student's repertoire of behaviors in relevant areas of focus for the program of study. To complete this course of study, the student will: Identify potential liability problems and how to avoid them Outline a basic structure for working through behavior cases Define and describe informed consent Describe boundary issues with regards to veterinarians and how to work effectively with them as allied professionals Explain the importance of utilizing written documentation of assessment and behavior change programming as well as end-of-services closing documents Prepare a service agreement with liability limiting clauses and informed consent sections Explain why confidentiality is important Define professionalism and explain why it is important Explain what professional practice guidelines or codes of ethics are and how they can help the professional Define and discuss competency and explain why it is important Discuss responsible advertising practices and why they are important Discuss ethics of assessment processes
