Description

Many dogs have difficulty navigating their way in life and rely on us, the owners, trainers, and behavior consultants to give them the skills to cope and to improve their quality of life. Whether your own dog, a foster dog in rescue, or a client's dog that you are trying to help is more ‘introverted’ and acts fearful, shy or withdrawn, or is more ‘extroverted’ and reacts with barking, lunging, or out and out aggression, there are many techniques out there to help. Knowing which one works best for the situation and the dog and how to implement them and integrate them into your behavior modification plan can be a challenge. Come join Karen Deeds, Certified Dog Behavior Consultant (IAABC) to help you learn how to help your dog! There are many variables that will help to determine the success of training and behavior modification; severity, predictability, environment, and a number of human factors are just some variables that will be analyzed. Creating a behavior modification plan must include management along with the integration of science based behavior modification techniques. Power point, video and working with the dogs will be utilized during the seminar. AGENDA (Cost to be announced. Participants may attend and pay for Friday evening session only or attend and pay one price for Friday/Saturday/Sunday package). FRIDAY EVENING - 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM Learning Theory and Training Mechanics! Come explore the concepts of classical and operant conditioning and how to apply it to dog training. We will discuss the 4 stages of learning, the importance of clear communication, and the power of clean mechanics using Location Specific Markers to facilitate strategic placement of the reinforcement and manipulate arousal. If we can teach a giraffe to willingly stand still for a blood draw, we can train dogs without aversive or forceful techniques! *This session is mandatory for those attending Saturday/Sunday sessions, but will be available for anyone to attend separately who wishes to learn about training like rescue groups, pet owners, and trainers new to the positive reinforcement concept. SATURDAY - 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Canine body language overview. Foundation skills; Relaxation, Play, Mental Stimulation, Impulse Control, Creating Alternative Behaviors, Emergency protocols; Thresholds; Introduction to various behavior modification protocols. Working spots with dogs will be available but limited. TBD. SUNDAY - 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Adding to the previous day of training we will introduce Pattern Games and put the pieces together. Working spots with dogs will be available but limited. TBD Karen Deeds is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer-Knowledge Assessed (CPDT-KA) and a Certified Dog Behavior Consultant (CDBC) who is well known for her work with behavioral problems in dogs especially fear, reactivity and aggression.
