Description

Service Dogs Inc (SDI) offers a hands-on class in Service Dog Training for professional trainers. Based on the positive reinforcement (+R) techniques developed over 25 years of training Assistance Dogs, this course is a combination of lecture, discussion, demonstration, and hands-on activities. Students practice techniques for each training topic using Hearing and Service Dogs in training with SDI. Scientific principles and training philosophies are based on +R based operant conditioning. Topics cover the process from building relationship, identifying most rewarding stimuli, basic behaviors, trainer mechanics, redirection and LRS, client application and matching, advanced behavior training process (wheelchair work, sound response, etc.), specialty behaviors, client classes and in-home training. All topics include hands-on practice. Outings include public work in a mall setting and screening for potential dogs at a local shelter. The goal is to cover the entire training process from dog adoption to client graduation.
