Description

The Academy for Dog Trainers offers a comprehensive distance learning and personal video coaching program for applied dog behavior practitioners in training, behavior modification, and client counseling. The program is divided into four sequential Levels (Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior), each with a 6-month deadline for completion following student admission and registration. This course description covers the content and requirements to complete the Senior Level. The primary focus of this Level is in-depth study and preparation for the Academy’s comprehensive Final Exam to become a Graduate. The 6-hour, 200-question, multiple-choice exam tests a student’s knowledge and ability to correctly apply his or her understanding of the program material to a wide variety of training, behavior, and counseling situations. The exam covers all the program content from the Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior Levels including: all 16 academic modules covering Animal Learning, Dog Training, Obedience, Breeds, History, Ethology, Behavior Problems, Fear & Aggression, Classes, Critical Thinking, Client Counseling, and Psychotropic Medications through a cumulative total of 1700+ presentation slides, 109 video clips, and 30+ handouts. The exam also covers 86 hour-long webinars designed to expand on the modules content, plus 115 pages of academic articles, 50+ training plans, and 30+ class lesson plans. Additionally, the entire text of “Excel-Erated Learning” by Pamela Reid, PhD is required reading for the final exam. Senior students also review the Academy’s 3 business and client modules on Branding, Marketing, and Client Relationships, which include 200+ presentation slides and related webinars. Additionally, Senior students have ready access to case mentoring and personal coaching at any time. All course content is accessed through the Academy’s state-of-the-art, interactive, online learning platform “The Dog Scientific”, which provides extensive recorded lecture presentations rich in audio-visual elements, plus both live and recorded webinars, extensive case studies, active discussion forums, study tools, video case analyses, multiple quizzes, practice exams, and ongoing client case mentoring. All Academy practices are based on the latest evidence-based models with training plans and methods that have been field-tested on thousands of dogs. The recommended minimum weekly study time for this course is 12 hours per week or approximately 300 hours over a 6 month period, though many students opt to spend more time.
