Description

Topics presented include: • Evaluations/Assessments as a predictor of behavior. • The 5 marketable skills that all shelter dogs can be taught in order to make them more adoptable and apt to stay in their forever home. • Identifying the top 5 behavior problems in shelters and how to fix them. • Kennel enrichment 101. • Engaging and supporting volunteers. • How to facilitate good dog meets and positive playgroups. • Medical problems that present behaviorally and vice versa. • Canine body language and safe handling. • Positive counseling for adopters. • Combatting compassion fatigue. This workshop about canine behavior is targeted towards helping shelter staff, volunteers, rescue workers, and dog trainers to learn how to put together a behavior program for an animal shelter or rescue, using current dogs in residence at the Women’s Humane Society. Continuing education units for the CCPDT and IAABC will be offered for attending this seminar. The workshop offers auditing spots and a limited number of working spots. Participants who select a working spot will be paired with an adoptable shelter dog for the duration of the seminar and will work under seminar staff to teach the dog skills necessary to find permanent placement with a family.
