Description

LEARNER-CENTRIC TRAINING FOR DOGS, HORSES AND PEOPLE. When you read this line, you may be thinking, “Learner-centric - Big sigh. Here’s one more marketing tag line in the long list people have come up with to brand their training as something different.” We want to respond to that by saying: No! ALL good training should be centered around the learner’s needs. Whether you are teaching your dog, your horse, your child, your co-worker, your client; it’s not good enough that the learner performs a given task. The learner’s well-being must be included in any measure of success. And well-being goes beyond the achievement of short term goals. Learner-centric training looks down the road to support the long-term emotional and physical well-being of the learner. When someone is coming from correction-based models of training (think parenting, schools, traditional animal training), the transition into positive reinforcement can be an awkward one. If you haven’t grown up with good examples to follow, often you end up just sugar coating same-old, same-old. When your animal puts slack in the lead, you may feel better because you are handing out treats, but you are still trying to stop him from doing something YOU don’t like. Learner-centric training encourages us to take a deeper look at what we are doing. We’ve put away our whips and our choke chains, and replaced them with treats. That’s a good start, but we don’t want to become complacent. It’s time to dig a little deeper into what we are doing, and ask, "Can we do better?" Every new innovation becomes the stepping stone for the next discovery. Come be part of that discovery!
